Interested in singing with us? Here’s more information.
Bell’Arte is a welcoming community dedicated to music making. The choir has been in existence for over 20 years and has strong connections to an international community of music educators, academics, composers and artists. Our repertoire includes music from across the globe with musical influences from Asia, Africa, Eastern and Western Europe, South America, Australia and New Zealand. Styles range from chant, medieval and renaissance polyphony to chromatic, minimalistic music and jazz. Our concert experience goes beyond individual songs, incorporating other art forms and appealing to a broad audience. Bell’Arte members can expect to be exposed to new forms of music and find personal challenge and opportunities for collaboration.
We rehearse every Saturday morning from 10:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Toronto Mennonite Centre on Queen Street East, in the beautiful Beach neighbourhood of Toronto. We perform three concerts a year at St. Simon the Apostle Church in downtown Toronto. In addition, we perform community concerts which are fundraisers for the choir or a special cause. More information about our rehearsals can be found in our rehearsal schedule.
We encourage prospective members to contact our Membership Co-ordinator and come out to a regular rehearsal to meet our members and sing through some repertoire with us. If you wish to audition for Bell’Arte, we can then arrange a time for you to get together with our Music Director.
While Bell’Arte Singers is a community choir, we strive for a polished musical product. Therefore, while we don’t expect that our singers will be singers of professional caliber, we do require singers to demonstrate certain musical and vocal proficiencies so that they will be able to keep pace with our rehearsals and make a positive contribution to our artistic goals. Potential members are auditioned for singing ability, sight singing and voice placement.
In addition to “just singing”, choir members donate time and funds to help with choir operation. And members are expected to sell tickets to our concerts. BAS Information and Guidelines, given to you when you become a member, describes a choir member’s roles and responsibilities in much greater detail.
